Abstract

This paper describes the loading tests carried out on box beams of two different lengths but of the same cross section. The overall sizes of the beams were 115 mm X 395 mm X 5.4 m and 115 mm X 395 mm X 7.2 m. The box beams were assembled by nailing plywood webs to both sides of timber without the use of adhesives. The box beams were designed according to standard engineering practice and the tests were carried out to confirm the design. Examples of design calculation of the two types of box beam are given.
