Abstract

In this paper the status of biological diversity in the country is examined in the context of the forest ecosystem, wildlife, livestock, agricultural crops and aquatic flora and fauna. In so doing, the concept of biodiversity is discussed, and attention drawn to habitat loss and pollution as well as over-exploitation of biological resources over the last several decades. International cooperation in acquiring wild germplasm, especially of crop plants, is highlighted. Existing policies and legislations covering biological diversity are described. Finally, it is noted that key legislations for the protection of biological diversity are already in place but that what is required is effective implementation of these legislations.
